Chapter 16 - The Father's Final Gambit

|

By Nicolás’s second birthday, Elena’s life had transformed completely.

She had finished her master’s degree in Contemporary Art Management and opened her own independent art consulting firm, renting a bright, modern studio space in the city's cultural district.

Her father, Don Rafael, had turned into an obnoxiously proud grandfather.

Every Sunday afternoon, Rafael’s sleek black sedan would pull up to Elena’s apartment building, loaded with an absurd number of oversized toys, stuffed animals, and clothes.

On this particular Sunday, Rafael walked into the apartment carrying a massive, child-sized electric toy car wrapped in a giant red bow.

Elena stood in the hallway with her arms crossed, eyeing the miniature sports car incredulously.

“Papa,” Elena sighed, trying to maintain a stern face. “He is two years old. Why does he need a battery-operated Mercedes?”

“Technically, it is an officially licensed scale replica,” Rafael argued smoothly, setting the remote control on the kitchen counter. “And it builds hand-eye coordination. It’s an educational investment.”

“You bought him a six-foot stuffed giraffe last week, Papa,” Elena countered, laughing. “My living room looks like a toy store.”

Nicolás came running out of his bedroom, his tiny feet pitter-pattering on the hardwood, and immediately threw his arms around Rafael’s knees.

“Grandpa!” the little boy squealed.

The legendary corporate titan, who made billionaire investors tremble in boardrooms across Europe, immediately dropped to his knees on the rug, making ridiculous funny faces to amuse his grandson.

Elena watched them from the kitchen, a warm, contented feeling filling her chest. The dark shadow of the Navarro family legacy had officially been replaced by unconditional love.
