Chapter 35 - A New Horizon

Six months later.
The spring sun warmed the bustling streets of Madrid. The new branch of the Montes Foundation shelter stood proudly in the heart of the city—a modern, sunlit building made of glass, wood, and stone, welcoming dozens of families in need every single day.
I stood on the second-floor balcony, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching the children playing in the courtyard below.
Nicolás was down there, kicking a soccer ball with three other boys, his bright, happy laughter echoing through the open space. He was thriving, healthy, and completely free from the shadows of his father and grandfather.
Mateo walked out onto the balcony, holding a tablet. "The morning financial reports are in, Elena. The foundation's private endowment is fully funded for the next twenty years."
"No Swiss accounts?" I teased softly.
Mateo smiled—a rare, genuine expression. "100% clean, transparent, public donations. Not a single cent of dark money."
"Good," I said, taking a sip of coffee. "How is my father doing?"
"The court doctors say his heart is weakening," Mateo reported gently. "He spends most of his days in the garden. He asks about Nicolás every week."
I looked down at my son laughing in the courtyard. "Send him a photo of Nicolás at his soccer game. But keep the distance, Mateo."

"Understood," Mateo nodded.
I looked up at the clear blue sky, breathing in the fresh spring air. For the first time in my life, I wasn't running from the past. I wasn't playing anyone else's game. I was the architect of my own destiny.
