Chapter 60 - The Hydra

The sky above the mountain pass suddenly darkened, not from clouds, but from the massive silhouette of an unmarked, military-grade dropship descending through the freezing mist. It operated with terrifying, silent efficiency, hovering directly over the mountain road.
The downdraft from its thrusters whipped the snow into a blinding blizzard.
I shoved Julian away, raising my pistol toward the imposing aircraft. Audrey broke through the smoke of the destroyed convoy, limping heavily, her rifle raised. We stood back to back, staring up at the belly of the beast.
"What is that?" Nicolás yelled, running out from behind the rocks and standing beside me, refusing to hide any longer.
"The true face of the Viper," Julian announced, standing up and brushing the snow from his coat, his eyes locked on the descending ship. "The Vanguard was phase one. I was phase two. You have finally earned an audience with the architect of the new world."
The dropship’s heavy ramp slowly lowered, hitting the snow-covered ground with a deafening metallic thud.
The silhouette of a single figure stood at the top of the ramp, flanked by a dozen soldiers wearing armor unlike anything I had ever seen—sleek, featureless, and completely alien.
The figure slowly stepped down the ramp, their face obscured by the shadows and the swirling snow.
"Audrey," I whispered, my finger tightening on the trigger of my empty pistol, the reality of the situation settling over me like a suffocating blanket. We were outgunned, outmaneuvered, and completely exhausted.
"I'm with you, Elena," Audrey replied softly, her voice steady despite the overwhelming odds. "To the end."
The figure reached the bottom of the ramp and stopped. They didn't raise a weapon. They simply stood there, staring at me, as the high-frequency beacon from the hard drive continued to scream into the desolate mountains.

The first war had ended. The second war was a lie.
The true war... the war for the survival of the world... was only just beginning.
