Chapter 17 - The Judgment

One afternoon while cleaning out her study desk, Elena found a small, velvet-lined box tucked away in the back of a drawer.
She opened it. Inside lay her old smartwatch—the screen shattered into a web of spiderweb cracks, the black strap scuffed and faded.
She picked it up, feeling the light weight of the device in her palm.
Three years ago, she had believed that this tiny piece of technology was the only thing standing between her and utter destruction. She had believed that without the digital recording, without the automated emergency alert, she would have been helpless.
Footsteps sounded behind her. Nicolás stepped into the study, holding a half-eaten red apple.
He peered into the box, pointing his tiny finger at the broken watch.
“Mommy, what’s that?” Nicolás asked, tilting his head curiously. “Is it broken?”
Elena looked down at her son, then down at the cracked glass.
“Yes, sweetie,” Elena smiled gently. “It’s broken.”
“Throw it in the trash!” Nicolás suggested cheerfully, taking a crunchy bite of his apple. “We get a new one!”
Elena let out a soft laugh. She reached out, ruffled his hair, and closed the velvet box.
“No, baby,” Elena said softly. “We’ll keep it right here.”

She put the box back in the drawer, but she didn't lock it this time. She realized she no longer needed the watch to prove what she had survived. The real power hadn't been in the microchips or the cellular signal that night.
The real power had been the moment she decided that she and her son deserved to live in the light.
