Chapter 31 - The Last Card

The heavy steel vault doors behind us suddenly slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic hiss. The electronic keypads turned from green to red.
Valentin pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his brow, his aristocratic composure cracking into raw, vicious fury.
"You think you're clever, girl?" Valentin hissed, his voice dropping into a guttural growl. "You think a few frozen bank accounts stop a man who has controlled governments for forty years?"
"You're an old man sitting in a steel box, Valentin," I replied, standing my ground. "The police are upstairs right now."
"The police in this city work for me!" Valentin roared. He tapped a panic button under the table.
Two armored guards stepped out from the shadows of the vault corridor, drawing heavy tactical pistols with sound suppressors attached.
Mateo drew his weapon instantly, stepping in front of me. "Elena, get behind me!"
"Nobody is leaving this room alive," Valentin sneered, stepping back behind his guards. "You will die here, Elena. Your father will be blamed for your murder, and I will take your son by force."
"You forgot one thing, Valentin," I said quietly, looking at the security cameras mounted near the ceiling.

"And what's that?" Valentin taunted.
"I didn't come to Zurich to negotiate," I said, pulling a heavy brass remote from my coat. "I came to burn the bank down."
