Chapter 33 - The Ledger of the Dead

|
Three days later.
The Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s office in Bern was quiet, illuminated by the pale afternoon sunlight filtering through the tall arched windows.
I sat across from Prosecutor Weber, a sharp, middle-aged woman with silver-streaked hair and an unreadable expression. On the desk between us sat a thick stack of finalized legal documents.
"Mrs. Montes," Prosecutor Weber began, setting her glasses down. "The evidence you provided from Bank Account 409 has allowed us to seize over two billion dollars in illegal assets tied to the Vance Syndicate."
"What about my foundation?" I asked, my voice calm.
"The deeds to the land in Madrid have been completely cleared of all encumbrances," Weber confirmed, pushing a blue folder toward me. "The court has ruled that your foundation was an innocent third party. The land is officially, permanently yours."
I let out a long, quiet breath, feeling a knot in my chest loosen for the first time in years. "And my father?"
Weber paused, her expression turning somber. "Your father signed a full confession regarding his financial dealings thirty years ago. Because of his cooperation and age, he has been granted house arrest at his estate in Madrid. He will not serve prison time, but his assets... Montes Global Group... will be liquidated to pay restitution to Vance's victims."
"Good," I said without hesitation. "Let it burn. We don't need his blood money."

Weber looked at me with a mixture of awe and pity. "You destroyed an empire in seventy-two hours, Mrs. Montes."
"No," I replied, standing up and taking the blue folder. "I just took back my life."
