Chapter 55 - The Viper’s Ledger

|

I stepped out of the SUV into the freezing mountain wind, pulling my heavy coat tight against the chill. The massive steel doors of the Alpine Vault loomed above me, completely featureless except for a small, illuminated biometric scanner set into a stone pedestal.

I walked up to the scanner, stripped off my glove, and pressed my palm against the glass. A red laser swept over my hand, followed by a retinal scan that forced me to keep my eyes wide open against a blinding light.

Identity confirmed. Welcome, Ms. Rostova.

With a deep, resonant groan that shook the ground beneath my feet, the massive steel doors slowly parted. I stepped into the brightly lit, sterile cavern.

Inside, heavily armed guards in tactical gear watched me silently from elevated catwalks. A perfectly dressed concierge met me at the entrance, his face completely devoid of emotion.

"Account 774," I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.

"Right this way, Madam," he replied, turning sharply and leading me down a long, metallic corridor lined with thousands of identical safety deposit boxes.

We stopped in front of a small, reinforced titanium drawer near the back of the facility. The concierge stepped away, giving me privacy.

I inserted a physical key I had extracted from the binding of my father’s journal, turning it slowly until the locking mechanism clicked. I pulled the heavy drawer open.

Inside sat a single, encrypted hard drive, no larger than a deck of cards. Beside it lay a handwritten note in my father’s unmistakable handwriting: To Elena. If you are reading this, I failed to protect you. Burn it.

This was it. The Viper’s master ledger. Billions of dollars in black money, the lifeblood of Julian Vance's entire criminal empire, resting in the palm of my hand.

I slipped the hard drive into my coat pocket and closed the drawer. The victory felt hollow, shadowed by the terrifying reality of what I was holding.

I turned and walked briskly out of the vault, the heavy steel doors sealing shut behind me. But as I stepped back into the freezing mountain air, the victory turned into pure ash.

The rented SUV was gone.

In its place stood three black armored vehicles, surrounded by heavily armed mercenaries. And standing in the center of the road, holding a gun to Nicolás's head, was Julian Vance.
